Neuma is a free and independent concert company founded in Vicenza in September 2014. Active nationally and internationally, it has given over 150 concerts and boasts publications for the Eufonia publishing house. The ensemble has a vast repertoire ranging from Viennese classicism to modern compositions specially written for Neuma. The instrumentation varies, but is predominantly based on the use of wind instruments, from the reed trio to the classical quintet.
Neuma has performed for Festival Organistico Internazionale di Vicenza, Alpen Classica Festival, Kulturstadl Mieming, Arteven, Le altre note and OndeMusicali. A strong identifying trait of this ensemble is the choice to perform any kind of repertoire, regardless of era and genre, frequently making use of transcriptions and arrangements written by Maestro Matteo Dal Toso. Since 2023 Neuma has been collaborating with accordionist Marcello Grandesso in the realisation of ASTOR, a project focused on the rediscovery and enhancement of Astor Piazzolla’s music, revised in a classical instrumentation for woodwind quartet and accordion.
At the same time, Neuma curates and develops a project focusing on film music of the Italian 20th century, with particular attention to the music of Morricone, Rota and Piovani. Within this programme, called La settima arte, some original compositions commissioned by the ensemble are noteworthy. They aim at enhancing the most beautiful melodies of Italian auteur music of the last century in a classical and chamber music key: hommages dedicated to Mina, Lucio Dalla and Lucio Battisti are thus created. These compositions clearly trace the salon form of the fantasia on operatic themes, preserving the intent, but updating the musical content.
