The first edition of the Saxfest took place at the Tyrolean State Conservatory in Innsbruck in collaboration with saxophone professor Michael Krenn.
The second edition was organised in September 2018 by the Cross-Border Association in Trentino (Val di Sole) at the Terzolas Capuchin Monastery. The third edition followed in November 2019 in Valle Isarco (South Tyrol), which concluded the first euroregional cycle with over 100 participants, including teachers, students and orchestra members.
After a break in 2020 due to the pandemic, the festival returned in October 2021 and finally found its permanent home in Bressanone/Brixen.
At that time, 33 participants from Austria, Italy, Lithuania, South America and China took part in the masterclasses. The Alpen Classica Euroregional Symphony Orchestra also took part in the final concert for the first time, presenting a repertoire entirely dedicated to the saxophone.
Since 2021, the festival has been held annually in Bressanone/Brixen in November. The Orchestra Euroregionale Alpen Classica – Euregio Symphonieorchester has been an integral part of the Saxfest ever since and accompanies the soloists in the festive gala concert.
The 6th edition in 2022 welcomed 30 students and seven teachers from all over Europe and beyond.
The 7th edition in 2023 continued this format and brought a special innovation: in collaboration with German-speaking music schools, eight young talents who had excelled in the ‘Music Premiere’ competition took part. They presented themselves in their own final concert in Villanders/Villandro.
In addition, a workshop was organised for teachers from German-speaking music schools, including a book presentation by Vincent David (*La Technique du Son au Saxophone*).
Due to the growing demand, ten artists were invited to the 2024 edition – with almost 50 registrations.
Lecturers from Spain, the Netherlands, France, Switzerland and Italy will also be invited for the 2025 edition.
